Good Agricultural Practices (CanadaGAP)
Webinar Series

Join Elsie Friesen, Food Safety and Education Specialist with the BC Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries, for a series of four webinars on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). Register for one or all four. The choice is yours. 

Please note, Punjabi interpretation of key items will be provided during all webinars by Simran Bains.

Who should register?

1. If you are a producer/grower thinking about on-farm food safety (OFFS) these sessions are a great way of learning what it takes to implement a GAPs OFFS program to get you into bigger markets like institutions, grocery stores and value-added food processors.

2. If you are a grower who has gone through an audit and need a dedicated time to do the annual sign-off in your CanadaGAP manual and learn about any NEW requirements, this series of webinars will get your to-do list ready for this 2021 season and on the path to a successful audit.

It starts with you! In this session, speakers will address important issues including irrigation and potable water, pesticide equipment calibration, environmental farm plans, and more. The session will also speak to unique commodity requirements.
  

Webinar 4: Your product’s journey to the market place

Come on a joint journey of packer and producer practices. In this session, you will hear about grower and packer practices as well as new and innovative ways to keep your operations and products safe!



Where can I get a CanadaGAP manual?
1. Go to CanadaGAP to download Version 9.0 for 2021 and print off a copy; OR

2. Send an email to AgriServicBC@gov.bc.ca and request your 2021 Version 9.0 CanadaGAP Food Safety Manual for Fresh Fruits and Vegetables and the CanadaGAP Appendix manual. You must provide your mailing address to receive these in the mail.

Buy BC Program

Program opens: March 10, 2021
Program closes: April 7, 2021

B.C.’s farmers, fishers and food and beverage processors can now apply for the latest round of Buy BC funding to promote their products and increase sales within B.C. This cost-shared program helps eligible applicants with their marketing efforts using the Buy BC logo on their products or promotional materials to help consumers easily identify their product as a B.C. product.
 
Did you know? Eligible businesses can apply for free and at any time to get the Buy BC logo. The Buy BC logo is a certification mark and a strong marketing tool. Using the Buy BC logo on food and beverage product packaging makes it easier for consumers to find and choose B.C. food and seafood products at the point of sale.

Small and Medium-Sized Business Recovery Grant - NEW CRITERIA

As of March 4, 2021:

The program has been extended to August 31, 2021, or until funds are fully expended, whichever comes first. 

Businesses only need to show a 30% revenue loss from March 2020 to now when compared to the same one-month period in 2019. 

Help to prepare a complete application package is now available from a registered Small Business BC service provider.

New Food Hubs Announced

The BC Food Hub Network is growing, creating opportunities for producers and food processors while connecting more British Columbians to local food.

The Province is investing up to $5.6 million to expand the BC Food Hub Network to Victoria, Bowser, Cowichan Valley, Abbotsford, Kamloops, Creston, and the Kootenay-Boundary region.

Improved Training Improves Local Meat Supply

An updated, mandatory training program for rural abattoir operators in B.C. will help more British Columbians enjoy safe, locally raised beef, pork, and poultry, as well as contribute to food security and support businesses in rural communities.

The updated program, called SlaughterRight, offers self-paced and self-guided training for small, rural (Class D and E) licensed abattoirs. The program focuses on improved food safety, slaughter hygiene, facility and equipment design and sanitation, animal welfare, meat storage, and record-keeping requirements.
